5/10/2015-6/10/2015 International Workshop: Ceramic Evidence for a Byzantine-Islamic Tradition

This two day intensive and specialized international workshop focuses on the ceramic issues of the Byzantine-Islamic transition and the kind of societies reflected in that ceramic record that developed in different parts of the eastern Mediterranean following the Islamic conquests of the 7th century C.E. The workshop will feature presentations from specialists working in Syria, Jordan, Israel, and Egypt. There will also be a focus on larger social and economic questions, the challenges of cross-regional comparisons, organizing fabric studies, the use of online resources and ceramics work groups, comparing project databases, and possible venues for publication. Participants will have an opportunity to work with the Laboratory Unit’s pottery collection as a group, addressing together the issues raised during the workshop.
